The group Ocarina Ensemble is a new born ocarina group in Budrio. They perform traditional italian music on typical instruments made by the Budrio maker Fabio Menaglio.
THE OCARINA is a globular flute, the origins of which can be traced back in time when masks, as well as seashells and tubular trumpets, were used to modify the voice. Spreading to all cultures practically all over the world, globular flutes soon became proper musical instruments with a whistle insufflator and finger holes. First they were carved out of gourds and pods or made out of eggshells, subsequently they were moulded out of clay, usually in zoomorphic or anthropomorphic shapes, so as to emphasize their descendence from masks and their former ritual and magical functions. |

Collection: Chamber Music Subcollection: Vocal and Piano Luigi Dallapiccola is one of the most celebrated Italian composers of the twentieth century. This disc features chamber music and songs alongside his complete works for solo piano. Whether drawing on the music of the past to inspire the contrapuntal organisation of his own, or concentrating on the opportunities for gentle lyricism afforded by bell-like instrumental and vocal sonorities, Dallapiccola’s commitment to traditional expressive nuance has been seen by critics as a powerful aspect of his Italian insistence upon cantabilità - songfulness.

Subcollection: Piano and Cello The chamber works on this CD by Julian Dawes give a representative sample of a compelling selection from his uniquely wide-ranging and varied output, the continuing traditional English style of Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Finzi but with its own individual voice and orchestral sound.
Amongst his 20th century English influences are the pastoralism and extended tonality of Herbert Howells, the richness of Walton, the elegant delicacy of Berkeley and the jazzy impetus of Rodney Bennett; wider European influences include the caustic irony of Shostakovich and Kurt Weil, and the rhythmic impetus of Prokofiev and Stravinsky. Yet Dawes welds from these influences an individual voice that is both distinctive and refreshing, displaying assured craftsmanship and characterful invention. (Malcolm Miller 2008) |
